Are you following @cinemapalettes? No? Stop wasting my time and get at it. It’s so great. Cinema Palette man (who knows his name?) has the best job – err past time – in the world. He watches movies. And then he comes up with a color palette for the film. G-E-N-I-U-S. Most people probably don’t get that excited about this but for someone that works with color day-in and day-out, these are pretty inspirational.
What’s interesting to me is how much the color palette says about the film – the timeframe, the mood, whether it’s set in the frigid North (The Revenant), takes place in a make believe land (Alice Through the Looking Glass) or involves a lot of blood (The Silence of the Lambs). Just with colors!
Take a look at some of our favorite palettes/movies below!
Lost in Translation
So many deep feelings.
Aladdin
Arabian nights, true love, and of course, every 10 year old girl’s halloween costume in 1995 – Jasmine’s two piece.
Napoleon Dynamite
Weird 90’s fashion makes up a weird color palette. But I kinda like it.
Shawshank Redemption
As grim as the hills.
Moonrise Kingdom
Give me this palette any day. It’s nearly as good as the movie.
